X-BRIDGE Project in the News

April 6th, 2026 – The University of Maine & US DOT ARPA-I (Advanced Research Projects Agency – Infrastructure) have embarked on a collaborative research project: X-BRIDGE (eXceptional Bridges through Innovative Design and Groundbreaking Engineering) This project – focused on designing bridges that can be deployed in half the time, at half the cost, and lasts twice as long – is reimagining the future of infrastructure by leveraging advanced materials, innovative design, and cutting-edge data systems to improve resilience, extend lifespan, and reduce costs across the nation’s transportation network.

Recently, the potential impact of X-BRIDGE has been featured in three national journal articles, highlighting the growing excitement for this innovative project:

Clearing the Roadblocks to Transportation Innovation, The Federation of American Scientists

Speeding Composite Bridge Adoption, ACMA Composites Manufacturing

UMaine ASCC secures $8 million USDOT partnership, Composites World

The inclusion of X-BRIDGE in respected journals marks an important milestone for the project. Having TIDC research shared through national platforms helps bring critical visibility to the challenges facing U.S. infrastructure and the solutions being developed to address them. By sharing findings with a wider audience of researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders, we can more effectively raise awareness of solutions on the horizon to aging, costly, and deteriorating infrastructure.
